When Bryan Lane’s father-in-law falls gravely ill, he calls his wife, Mona Scott, to inform her and urges her to undergo surgery to save her father’s life. However, while keeping her first love’s dog company at a pet clinic, Mona accuses Bryan of fabricating an excuse to get her attention. She dismissively tells him that she’ll return home the next day for her father’s birthday.
